Moving from Canskate to Starskate

For a skater to qualify for our Starskate Junior Program they will have achieved a minimum of their Canskate Level 4 badge (Control, Agility and Balance.)

When identified as a candidate for the Junior program a skater will be invited by the Starskate Director.  Please do not sign up your skater for this level unless you have received an invitation from the Starskate Director.

If your skater has progressed through our canskate program and has achieved their complete Canskate stage 3 badge and is currently working on Canskate Stage 4, the STARSkate Director  will review with our CanSkate  Director to determine if the skater is a candidate for the Junior program

Junior – Must have passed Canskate Stage 4 and  be invited (Open Session, Juniors must have obtained Stage 6 Badge and have a private coach)

When do I hire a private coach

Our Junior Session is a fully coached 50 minute session.  Junior skaters can acquire private coaching before but it is optional.  Private coaching occurs during a Junior session - it is separate from  and in addition to the group coaching that is provided. Private coaches will call on your skater to conduct a private session during the 50 minute group lessons.

Junior skaters who have completed Stage 6 and wish to skate in the Open session MUST have a private coach for that session.

Coaches and Executive members are not permitted to recommend a coach.  Parents are encouraged to review our coaches page at https://www.bfsc.net/coaches/  Please contact coaches through email or phone to determine if this private coach is right for you and your skater.

Below is a sample email from the Starskate Director.

Good evening Parent.  My name is Monica Johnston and I am the STARSkate Director for the Bowmanville Figure Skating Club.  I am contacting you to let you know that (skater’s name) has been identified as a candidate for our Junior program.  This session provides an environment for skaters to continue to develop their skills in a more figure skating oriented environment and transition from CanSkate into STARSkate.  CanSkate skills are further developed with the same ribbons and badges being achieved.  Our Junior skaters are fully coached for the duration of each 50 minute session which includes a 10 minute group stroking session and a cool down at the end of the session.  Sessions run on Tuesdays at 5:30 and on Thursdays at 6:30 at South Courtice arena. Skaters have the option of skating one or both days; however there is currently more space available on the Tuesday session.  Take note as well that (skater’s name) is quite close to moving onto the Junior session as well - it would only be a month or two before she would be ready to move.

Please let me know if you would like to take advantage of this opportunity for (skater’s name).

Below are the elements and descriptions of the Canskate Level 4 that must be completed to move into our Junior program.
